چکیده مقاله
Abstract
Introduction: This paper summarizes the potential options applying Electrochemical method for the improvement of effluents from mill wastewater treatment. one of the most widely used water consumption industries and wastewater producers are Cellulose industries such as paper towels. These effluents have adverse effects such as color, odor, BOD and COD in water due to their slow degradable and complex materials. Therefore, it is important to recognizing industrial pollutants and using environmentally friendly methods in their treatment and the minimum consumption of water, energy and materials with maximum efficiency. Regarding the treatment of wastewater, electrochemical processes have various advantages over other methods. They are robust, easy to operate and flexible in case of fluctuating wastewater load [1]. In addition, a relatively broad spectrum of organic and inorganic impurities can be removed.
Materials and Methods: In this study, electrochemical methods with the aim of removing COD from the effluent of Latif Paper Products Company will be used as a real sample. Influencing factors removal including contact time, current density and pH are investigated. The electrochemical apparatus consists of a power supply, flat-plate anode and cathode (4 cm ×12 cm) mounted in a plastic cell (200 ml.( A high voltage pulse generator (HB 17300 SL, OMEGA) was used as the power supply. In this study, the cathode was made from Stainless steel, and the anodes were a tube of Iron [2]. The distance between cathode and anode was set at 2 cm.
Results: Preliminary results obtained from the electrocoagulation (EC) method show that the COD of the effluent has decreased from 4200 mg /l to 1603 mg /l (time=1 h, pH=7, Voltage=7, current =1.8A) (Table 1)
Another advanced electrochemical oxidation process is electro-Fenton (EF). The treated effluent from the electrical coagulation method was used after adjusting the conditions (pH =3, voltage =7 v, current = 1.4A) and adding 2 ml of H2O2, the results of which show a significant reduction in COD effluent is up to 150 mg / l (95%) (Table 2).
Discussion and Conclusion: As a result of this study, it is said that EF and EC methods can be used to treat paper mill wastewater, effectively. However, the number of parameters which have effects on treatment efficiency of the method is too many [3]. Therefore, operating parameters such as treatment duration, initial pH, H2O2 concentration and applied DC current should be selected more precisely. According to the results, optimum operation conditions respectively of the EF and EC processes for the treatment of paper mill wastewater can be recommended as initial pH 3 and 7, constant DC current = 2A and treatment time = 60min. At these conditions, approximately, 95% COD removal can be reached. Changes of distance between the electrodes have insignificant effect on treatment efficiency. Nevertheless, use of long electrode distance in EF reactor causes a significant increase in energy consumption. The results of this study can lead to effective treatment of effluent and reduce the environmental effects of the treatment process.
