چکیده مقاله |
During the last few decades, research in energy conversion is growing due to global problems due to unsustainable nature and the environmental impact of fossil fuels. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) converts the chemical energy stored in organic material into electricity by utilizing the metabolism power of bacteria for electricity and simultaneously removes a significant amount of organic waste from sewage, that are a promising technology for sustainable energy production. One of the most effective parts of the MFC is the proton exchange membrane. Although nafion commercial membrane have suitable properties, it is facing with some limitations such as oxygen and substrate crossover, inefficiency at high temperatures which can be improved and enhanced microbial fuel cell efficiency. It was discovered that higher power density and coulombic efficiency could be obtained through proper providing of microbes and suitable materials which can improve MFC operation. Also, the full-scale application of MFC is impeded by materials cost and the wastewater low buffering capacity. This development will, of course, require support and collaboration from all academics, researchers, industries and governments.Once it is successfully developed, this technology would be able to solve the country’s electricity supply problem, leaving fossil fuels behind. |
