Over the past few years, the synthesis and characterization of cerium dioxide (CeO2) thin films have attracted a lot of attention from researchers thanks to their useful applications in the field of materials science and technology. These properties include high stability, high carrier density, high conductivity as well as good transparency [1]. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have received significant attention due to their vast majority of exceptional properties including size-dependent photoluminescent, high surface area and also electro-catalytic behavior [2]. In this work, simultaneous electrodeposition of cerium oxide and graphene quantum dots for electro-catalytic purposes was investigated. The prepared electrode was characterized carefully with scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and cyclic voltammetry in details. Based on electrochemical impedance spectra, it can be concluded that the simultaneous presence of cerium oxide nanoparticles and graphene quantum dots reduces the charge transfer resistance of the prepared electrode. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the prepared electrode, electrocatalytic oxidation of water was studied in detail. According to experimental results, the prepared CeO2-GQDs/GCE showed a better electrocatalytic response in the electro-oxidation of water in comparison with CeO2/GCE and GQDs/GCE. Shift of oxidation potential (0.3 V) to fewer positive values and decrease of overpotential in the case of CeO2-GQDs/GCE indicates the efficiency of the prepared electrode in water splitting. The current density of the prepared CeO2-GQDs/GCE in intensified in comparison with another electrode. Easy preparation procedure, high electrocatalytic behavior as well as high stability of CeO2-GQDs/GCE enables it as an efficient and novel electrocatalyst for electrochemical devices |
