چکیده مقاله:
Dairy industry is one of the most polluting industries with respect to using the volume of water for production. Dairy waste contains high organic loads, which are generally due to carbohydrates, lipids, and such high concentrations of mineral nutrients - potassium phosphate and nitrogen, and as a result, improper discharge to wastewater can cause reduction of dissolved oxygen and aquatic toxicity[1]. Since dairy waste has high BOD and COD and significant organic and mineral materials, releasing these effluents into water without proper treatment can cause serious environmental issues[2]. Therefore, it is need to implement appropriate methods to meet the standards of waste disposal. Dairy post-treatment methods include mechanical treatment, biological treatment, physical and chemical treatment, and advanced technologies. Dairy waste treatment is dominated by physical-chemical as well as biological methods, which burdens high cost due to the high oxygen and energy demands [3]. Microbial fuel cells as a promising option (MFCs) are capable to use a wide range of waste materials as the substrates while simultaneously generating bioelectricity and wastewater[4]. In this article, we comprehensive review is carried out regarding investigations made in recent years in this area with emphasis on microbial fuel cell advantages as an efficient method for simultaneous bioelectricity generation and wastewater treatment. Table 1 summarizes the most important researches performed on this issue.
