Preparation of Non-precious Metal Electrocatalysts Based on Metal Organic Framework for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Abstract
In this research, an oxygen reduction reaction catalyst consisting of Fe/Co bimetal based on a metal-organic framework was synthesized. For this purpose, first, the Fe-ZIT-MOF metal-organic framework was made from a mixture of Zn(NO3)2∙6H2O (480 mg), Fe(NO3)3∙9H2O (8.2 mg), 2-methyl imidazole (401 mg), and terephthalic acid (803.4 mg) in 25 mL of DMF and then the electrocatalyst (Fe-N/C) was obtained from pyrolysis and carbonization of the Fe-ZIT-MOF [1]. Fe-ZIT-MOF and Fe-N/C were identified by Ft-IR spectra, XRD pattern, ICP, CHNS, BET analysis, etc. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) measurement indicates that the Fe-ZIT-MOF support possesses a large surface area (1414 m2 g− 1) which is reduced to 471 m2 g− 1 after converting to Fe-N/C form. The ORR activation of the nonplatinum electrocatalyst synthesized was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) using a standard three-electrode system. Cyclic voltammetry diagram of Fe-N/C was evaluated under argon and oxygen flew in 0.1 M KOH. The appearance of a peak at -0.82 V vs. RHE in the CV diagram (Fig 1) in an oxygen-saturated 0.1 M KOH solution indicates that the electrocatalyst is active for the oxygen reduction reaction. The RDE tests were recorded at various rotating speeds under the oxygen-saturated system (Fig 2) for demonstrating of ORR kinetics’ pathway. Generally, the RDE voltammograms display constant onset potential speeds with the rotating-speed-dependent current densities [2].
