High entropy materials are group of new materials which found tremendous attentions during the last decade due to their unique structural characteristics and the possibility of tuning their properties. The high entropy oxide with the composition (Co0.2Cu0.2Mg0.2Ni0.2Zn0.2)O shows high Li-ion conductivities along with promising Li-storage capacities which make this single phase composite oxide a good candidate for battery applications. For multicomponent materials, configurational entropy increases as the number of atoms participating in solid solution increases, respectively. The calcination temperature plays an important role forming a single-phase solid solution at higher temperatures (usually more than 900 C). Application in energy storage In the previous research, high entropy oxides as a new group of ceramic materials found many applications including catalysts, sensors (1). These materials consist of 5 or more elements which approach to thermodynamically stable single-phase form not by cohesive energy but under the influence of configurational entropy. Different methods and roots have been investigated in previous studies for synthesis of HEO. The main step of these methods is thermal treatment at high temperatures which recently challenged by a report which presented a single phase HEO achieved by calcination at moderate temperature (2). Sono-chemical and mechanochemical methods are successful in producing the stabilized high entropy oxides without the need of high temperature. This entropy effect was shown to has substantial influence on the electrochemical properties of rock-salt HEO (3). Berardan et al. shows that extracting a cation from a high entropy oxide changes the dielectric constant. This finding indicates that they can be used in modern microelectronic and for the development of new energy storage devices (4, 5). The combination of high Li-ion conductivities in Li doped high entropy oxide with high Li storage capacities make the rock salt HEO a good candidate for energy storage. The application of HEO as electrodes proved these findings. |
